Wednesday is The Day

Here’s a quick rundown of the five comics I’m looking forward to the most this week.

Captain America has been one of the most surprisingly enjoyable comics I’ve picked up over the past two years. When I started reading comics, I never thought I would even consider reading Captain America. But Ed Brubaker has that magic touch to his writing. He just knows how to make everything sound interesting.

If you’re not aware of what’s happened with Captain America in the past couple of years, here’s a small update:

He died.

His sidekick from World War II has now taken his place, but is still having some issues with living up to the great man that was Steve Rogers. If you’ve ever wanted to read some good Captain America stories, find anything written by Ed Brubaker (I hear Mark Waid’s stuff was good too).

That’s right.

There’s a Halo comic. And the last issue of this four part series that’s taken over a year to finish up is finally coming out.

So far it’s been pretty cool. Only half of the story actually centers around Master Chief, while the other half shows us what’s going on with some ordinary citizens. I enjoy it because you get some very cool moments with Master Chief just kicking ass, while at the same time you’re introduced to this cool little plot where some ordinary guy has to help stop an invasion of Cleveland. If you’re a fan of the game, get it. Even if you’re not, you could still like it.

Walking dead is one of those comics I’ll eventually dedicate an entire article to. One of the reasons people get easily addicted to this comic is because of the characters. There are so many of them that you’re bound to be attached to one of them, so you can’t help but want to know what happens to them next.

Oh yeah, and there’s zombies, but that’s only a small part of the book.

Robert Kirkman does an amazingĀ  job writing this comic. He knows how to keep the story going and he knows the characters so well that it makes their actions feel very real. I’ve never met any one who didn’t enjoy reading Walking Dead. It’s one of the greatest series being published right now.

A lot of things have been going on in the world of Superman, and one of the comics that’s helping tell his story is the same comic that introduced him. Action Comics has been around since the late 30’s, and it hasn’t always included Superman, but it’s always been associated with him. Currently, Superman isn’t even on the planet Earth. After a run in with Brainiac, the lost city of Kandor (bottled up before the destruction of Krypton), emerged and kind of… came back?

…Yeah, so now there’sĀ  a whole new planet called New Krypton, and Superman is currently living on it, mostly because General Zod is back (everybody remember Zod? You know, from the movie?), and he wants to keep an eye on him. But Action Comics is concentrating on what’s going on back on Earth, and we’re finding out that General Zod does indeed have some evil deeds in the works. Action Comics is currently being written by Greg Rucka, who rocks, and I plan discussing some other things of his.

I’ve already mentioned Ed Brubaker’s name before because of his work on Captain America, but I just have to mention his original series that he just recently started. It takes place in a very modern pulp world with evil villains and heroic, but flawed protagonists.

So far, the main story seems to be about a man who once was a villain, but now finds himself enjoying the life of saving people, but for his own dark reasons.

The names on the cover of this comic should be reason enough to pick it up. This is only the third issue and it’s coming out this Wednesday, and they’ve already done some reprints of the first two issues, so if you feel liking jumping on, I definitely advise you to do so.
